The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has reported that 16 Closure Orders and one Prohibition Order were served on food businesses throughout July for breaches of food safety legislation.
Closure Orders were served under the FSAI Act, 1998 on Mad Cow Milkshakes, Burgers & Kebabs, Cabra; Molloys on Talbot Street and the Ice Box in Balbriggan, all in Dublin, as well as on Casa De Burritos, Ennis and Bay Fish and Chips, Liscannor, both in Clare.
Rockin Joe’s on O'Connell Street in Limerick; Spring Chinese Restaurant in Mallow, Cork; The Crescent View Restaurant, Crescent Quay, Wexford and CFM Catering Limited based in Gracedieu in Waterford were also served Closure Orders under the FSAI Act.
A further seven Closure Orders were served under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, Tropicway in Navan, Meath (which received two), Lisa’s Trattoria in Terenure; Castlemill Roma Take Away in Balbriggan, and Jojo’s Chinese Restaurant on Parnell Street, Dublin, as well as on La Trattoria in Roscommon Town and the Blackwater Lodge Hotel in Enniscorthy, Wexford.
One Prohibtion Order was served under the FSAI Act, 1998 on Gary Creaven Fish Sales of Menlo, in Galway.
Chief Executive of the FSAI, Dr Pamela Byrne expressed disappointed at the high level of Enforcement Orders served in July, and the lack of vigilance by some food business owners in making sure they are fully compliant with food safety legislation.
“While the vast majority of food businesses are compliant with food safety legislation, unfortunately we continue to encounter cases where consumers’ health is put at risk through a failure to comply with food safety and hygiene requirements,” she said.
“These breaches are completely avoidable when food businesses have proper food safety management systems in place.”
“Food safety must be paramount. This requires greater focus to safeguard against standards slipping and to ensure that food served is safe to eat,” Dr Byrne concluded.
