Six Closure and One Prohibition Order Served To Food Businesses In March

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) yesterday (6 April) reported that six Closure Orders and one Prohibition Order were served to food businesses during the month of March.

The seven enforcement orders were served for breaches of food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.

The food businesses that were served Closure Orders are as follows: Lebanese Tapas (restaurant/café), Blackrock, Co. Dublin; China Tower (restaurant/café), Ballybofey, Donegal; Gunnings (grocery), Rathconrath, Westmeath; Hailan Asian Cuisine Restaurant, Dundrum, Dublin 14; Plaza Inn (take away) Dublin 12; Indiana (restaurant/café), Gorey, Wexford and Rene Cusack Ltd (fish processing) The Food Centre, Raheen, Limerick.

Allied to this, the FSAI also outlined that a successful prosecution was carried out by the HSE in relation to: Cliffords Bar (public house), Crookstown, Cork.

Commenting on the Enforcement Orders served in March, Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI said, “The legal responsibility for producing food that is safe to eat rests with food businesses. Enforcement Orders and most especially Closure Orders and Prohibition Orders are served on food businesses only when a serious risk to consumer health has been identified or where there are a number of ongoing serious breaches of food legislation."

Closure Orders and Prohibition Orders are served where there is a non-compliance with food legislation.

"Enforcement Orders are not served for minor breaches. Food inspectors have a range of other powers that they can use to deal with minor breaches. If food business owners are unsure of what is required of them by law, they can contact the FSAI Advice Line at [email protected] or visit its website www.fsai.ie or facebook page,” Dr Byrne added.
