Plans to demolish Tallaght's Belgard Inn and for it to be replaced with a Lidl have hit a road block after An Bord Pleanála refused Lidl Ireland GmbH planning permission, describing the proposed development as representing "a poor quality of urban design".
The company was applying for the construction of a new store with vehicular entrance; signage; car parking; new plaza; and retail/café building, reports dublinlive.ie.
An Bord Pleanála ruled, "It is considered that the proposed development would not provide an appropriate mix, range and type of uses to serve the requirements of the local catchment population. The proposed development, therefore, would seriously injure the residential amenities of the area and be contrary to proper planning and sustainable development."
It concluded, "To grant permission, therefore, for the proposed development would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area."
