The former Aungier House pub, which has been closed for around 20 years, is to undergo a €1 million redevelopment by Rustic Way Ltd (Press Up/Oakmount Group) after its sale was agreed at a cost of €831,000.
Rustic Way's application for the four-storey building on 43 Aungier Street and adjacent three-storey 1 Digges Lane is seeking the installation of new bar counters at ground, second and third floors, a new shopfront at ground level, sliding sash windows to first and second floors, as well as a new roof-top terrace with stone paving which will have three-metre high acoustic glass screens on three sides, reports Dublininquirer.com.
The application is proposing to add new historically appropriate fire places at first floor level and in the snug at second floor level and will construct stairs similar in style to that which were originally in place in order "to identify, reinforce, strengthen and protect its civic design character and dignity".
Cathal O’Neill Architect, on behalf of Rustic Way Ltd, described 43 Aungier Street in its planning application to Dublin City Council as being "internally, the building is in very poor condition. Few decorative features remain, other than the plasterwork on the first floor", while 1 Digges Lane was "of unremarkable design with few features of merit".
