Despite Fáilte Ireland's best efforts and the filming of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Skellig Michael, an overseas survey has shown that the majority of potential overseas visitors are still unaware of The Wild Atlantic Way.
Fáilte Ireland has heavily promoted the route over the past few years and has recently launched programmes like its Wild Atlantic Way Passport and 360 degree view Virtual Reality experience.
The tourim body has also been pouring extra resources into promoting Ireland's Ancient East, the east coast's equivalent to the touring region.
The low level of awareness, which saw only 7 per cent of a group of 4,000 potential visitors being aware of The Wild Atlantic Way, came as a surprise to Fáilte Ireland, but it hopes to increase this number to 20 per cent by next year, the Connacht Tribune reports.
