Planning permission has been applied for the demolition of Dublin's Tivoli Theatre and it to be replaced with a six-storey, 298-bedroom aparthotel.
Anthony Byrne, the owner of the venue, applied for permission on 22 December seeking the demolition of the theatre and some of the surrounding buildings, however the existing eight-bay building facades on 140-143 Francis Street will be retained reports 98FM.com.
The theatre can seat nearly 500 people and has a downstairs venue with a capacity of over 1200 people as well as car parking for up to 100 cars. The proposal will see the construction of a ground-floor restaurant, courtyard, foyer, retail/non-retail services outlets, gym and bicycle hire shop.
Although the plan doesn't include a replacement venue, Chair of the Council's arts committee and Labour City councillor for the South West Inner City, Rebecca Moynihan, said that the development should "keep the theatre there and have an element of art spaces within it. I think it would enhance the application and I think it would enhance what they're offering tourists and people who stay there".
