Planning Green Light Inches Closer For Biggest Hotel In Northern Ireland

It is being reported that the revised plans for what will be Northern Ireland's largest hotel look set to be approved by Belfast City Council.

Late last year Hastings Hotel group modified its original plan for the 200-bedroom Grand Central Hotel in Belfast to a larger 304-bedroom development.

The planned £30 million four-star development of one of Ireland's biggest buildings, the 23-storey Windsor House, is the single biggest investment in the the Hastings group history.

A report to planners at Belfast City Council, as reported by insidermedia.com, said: "Given the previous underuse of the existing office units on the site and the significant remaining provision of office accommodation within the city centre, the loss of office space is not considered detrimental to the city centre as a whole.

"The principle of a hotel has already been established at this location, the site is within a prime city centre location and it would further enhance the vitality and viability of the city centre.

"The proposed alterations and refurbishment are considered acceptable and will enhance the existing structure and bring a landmark building back into use."

Insidermedia.com added that the authority's planning committee has been recommended to approve the application on 11 April.
