A proposal for an extension to Dublin's Ashling Hotel which would see the construction of an eight-storey aparthotel adjacent to the venue has been met with opposition from An Taisce.
The proposal, which has the backing of Foxfield Inns Ltd., involves the demolition of four vacant and semi-derelict buildings. However, The Irish Independent reports that An Taisce has objected to the plans, asserting that the buildings' demolition is unjustified.
Kevin Duff of An Taisce stated, "it is senseless to demolish existing, reusable historic building stock with so much dereliction and vacant, undeveloped sites along the Luas line".
Consultants for Foxfield Inns have responded by submitting new documents to Dublin City Council which argue that the demolition is justified on the grounds that the proposed aparthotel has been designed with an eye to meet a specific demand for this kind of accommodation in the area around the Ashling Hotel.
