Traffic Trends Across Fast Food Segments In Ireland

Traffic trends in Ireland's fast-food sector mirror the evolving dynamics of the country's restaurant landscape. While some segments are thriving, others face significant challenges. Meaningful Vision Ltd’s analysis of traffic trends from 2024, tracking more than 2000 foodservice establishments in Ireland, reveals the companies, products, locations and time periods that are the biggest hit with customers.

Burger Chains Dominate

Burger chains have emerged as the clear leaders, enjoying a significant 2% increase in market share. This growth can be attributed to several factors, including continuous menu innovation, and a strong focus on convenience, mobile ordering, and delivery services ensuring maximum coverage. Moreover, burgers and pizzas drive dinner traffic (6pm - 9pm), outperforming casual dining during this period.

Chicken and Ethnic Cuisine Gaining Momentum

Chicken and ethnic fast-food outlets also experienced positive traffic trends in 2024, reflecting their growing popularity and an increase in demand for a diversity of options. Chicken shops witnessed footfall growth during lunchtime, reflecting a burgeoning market for quick and affordable midday meals.

Challenges for Coffee Shops and Pizza Restaurants

By contrast, coffee shops and pizza restaurants are facing headwinds, with a 2% decline in traffic share for each segment. This downturn may be attributed to several factors, including a shift in consumer preferences towards healthier options, increased competition from independent outlets, and economic pressures impacting discretionary spending.

Maria Vanifatova, the CEO of Meaningful Vision comments: “Since we started analysing footfall traffic in Ireland we have noticed significant differences compared to other countries such as the UK, France or Germany. The Irish fast-food market is undergoing a transformation. Understanding these traffic trends and adapting strategies accordingly will be crucial for operators aiming to ensure long-term success.”
