On this year's Bloomsday (Thursday 16 June) in Madrid, Tourism Ireland celebrated the centenary of Ulysses, with a number of events taking place throughout the day. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland, joined Tourism Ireland in the Spanish capital to highlight Dublin and its rich literary heritage.

James Joyce's Ulysses was first published as a complete novel in February 1922. One hundred years later, Tourism Ireland is taking every opportunity to shine a spotlight on "Ulysses100" in its promotional activity in Spain, and in other key markets for tourism around the world. The organisation’s aim is to encourage potential visitors to come and follow in the footsteps of Leopold Bloom, to discover Dublin and the home of Ulysses.
Thursday 16 June's programme was organised in collaboration with Soy de la Cuesta (an association representing the origins of Cuesta de Moyano, the site of Madrid’s book market), the Embassy of Ireland in Spain, Ateneo de Madrid and Barrio de las Letras. It included a special Bloomsday Breakfast, attended by approximately 30 Spanish journalists and influencers, who have been hearing all about Ulysses and how 2022 marks 100 years since its publication.

Susan Bolger, Tourism Ireland's manager in Spain, stated, "Tourism Ireland is delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland, to Madrid on Bloomsday, as we celebrate the centenary of Joyce's Ulysses and highlight Dublin and our rich literary heritage. We will continue to highlight 'Ulysses100' here in Spain and in other key markets around the world - particularly to our important 'culturally curious' audience.
