Irish Residents Took 4.5m Domestic Overnight Trips In Q3 2022

According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Irish residents took 4.5 million domestic overnight trips during the third quarter of last year.

The number of domestic overnight trips taken by Irish residents in Q3 2022 was 60% higher than the number taken during the same quarter in 2021, when 2.8 million trips were taken, according to statement published on CSO.ie, which also noted that total expenditure on domestic overnight trips during Q3 2022 was €1.1 billion, with those on holidays spending €808 million of that figure, while those visiting friends or relatives spent €155 million, and that the number of outbound overnight trips taken during Q3 2022 by Irish residents was 3.1 million, with total expenditure being €3.4 billion.

Statement By Statistician

The statement published on CSO.ie quoted statistician in the tourism and travel division Brendan Curtin as saying, "The figures provide information on domestic and international travel by Irish residents in the months of July, August and September (Q3) 2022. The data highlights the continued strong recovery in travel by Irish residents in 2022 following the disruption caused by COVID-19 restrictions. The number of domestic overnight trips taken in Q3 2022 was 16% higher than in the same period in 2019, while the total number of outbound overnight trips increased by 7%.

"In the period January to September 2022 Irish residents took 11.5 million domestic same-day visits and just under one million outbound same-day visits. Expenditure amounted to €602 million on domestic same-day visits and €93 million on outbound same-day visits in the first nine months of 2022."
