At its mid-year review in the Gibson Hotel yesterday (7 September), Fáilte Ireland’s Dublin Convention Bureau announced that, as a result of winning 100 new conferences for Dublin over the last several months, it has generated more than €46m of new business for the city in 2017 so far.
Events secured by the bureau to date include the 2019 World Con sci-fi convention, which will be delivering 5,000 delegates to Dublin with value of €8m; the 2020 International & European Congress on Obesity Conference, which will bring 2,300 delegates with value of €3.7m; and the European Federation of Periodontology’s 3rd Masterclinic, which will deliver 800 delegates with value of €1.3m, also in 2020.
Commenting on plans going forward, Dublin Convention Bureau manager Sam Johnston, said: "We are putting greater emphasis on widening out the season so that events can capitalise on quieter parts of the tourism season, and as we look to 2018 and beyond, we plan to introduce a ten year strategy for the growth of Ireland’s business tourism sector that will double the value to the local economy in that timeframe."
