The number of Northern Irish residents that used Dublin Airport in 2014 shot up by 52 per cent compared to the year before, with a record 864,000 people passing through.
The continuing growth of the airport's route network is the largest contributing factor to the growth, as it offers a broader selection of destinations than its Northern Irish counterparts.
An increased promotional presence of the airport from the DAA directly to Northern Irish customers through radio, outdoor and print media has also helped the upsurge.
“Dublin Airport continued to expand its market share in Northern Ireland last year, as Northern Ireland consumers responded to our extensive route network and the huge choice that we now offer,” said Dublin Airport spokesman Paul O’Kane.
Around 60 per cent of Northern Irish residents who used the airport travelled through two or more times.
Dublin Airport also continues to be the main international gateway for visitors to Northern Ireland, as 65 per cent of all passengers who come by air to the island of Ireland passed through Dublin Airport last year.
Further growth from the Northern Ireland market is expected this year as the number of available seats from Dublin Airport is up by almost two million this summer, which represents an 11 per cent increase in overall capacity from the airport.
