The Ibec body that represents aircraft lessors, Aircraft Leasing Ireland (ALI), has announced that its 31 members will collaborate to drive aviation in the direction of a sustainable future.
"Aviation Sustainability: Our Future"
A statement announcing the news published on Ibec's website said that ALI has launched an ESG narrative named "Aviation Sustainability: Our Future" that outlines steps that have been planned by aircraft lessors to achieve net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.
Steps
These steps include developing a charter this year to show carbon disclosures leadership and speed up progress in aircraft and low carbon technology; to represent, encourage and aid members to use their influence with the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and airline customers to ensure net zero carbon emissions can be achieved by 2050; to commit to an inaugural Aviation Sustainability Day in Ireland this year; to encourage members to act on the environment now; and to work with the University of Limerick regarding sustainability leadership initiatives and to increase the involvement of other universities in Ireland.
ALI Chair Statement
The statement announcing the above news included a statement from ALI chair Declan Kelly, in which he said, "Today, we are taking our first, unified, positive steps as lessors to show our commitment to supporting the wider industry to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
"This is achievable, but it requires a seismic shift in the development of new technologies in the area of carbon sequestration, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and new propulsion aircraft. Support is therefore required at all levels across government and industry. Ireland, as an island aviation nation, can play a leading role in this technological research, and leasing can underpin this by deploying our capital and buying power."
Author Information
"Aviation Sustainability: Our Future" was authored in conjunction with Oliver Wyman, the University of Limerick and TU Delft Netherlands, according to Ibec's website.
