The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel on Dublin's Golden Lane has applied for permission to add a 10-storey extension which will result in an extra 103 bedrooms being added to the 4-star hotel.
The Irish Independent says the plan will involve extra eight storey over two storey basement extension which, when completed, will increase the hotel's capacity by 40% to 255 bedrooms.
The value to the hotel is estimated to be in the tens of millions in extra revenue each year, should the plans be approved.
Other features of the plan include the creation of a spa and wellness treatment centre, a gym and juice bar, as well as extending the hotels function room.
Galway developers the Rhatigan Group, owners of the hotel, had reported the Radisson's pre-tax profits as increasing to €775, 946, while its gross profits went up from €8.67 to €9.18 million by the end of August 2014.
The Irish Tourism Industry Confederation has previously reported that there is a need for an additional 30 hotels in Dublin by 2020/21. This gap in the market has resulted in the Dublin City Council having to deal with a large number of applications from investors trying to get their foothold into this booming market.
