Research by sponsorship specialist Livewire has found that Irish consumers are planning to increase their personal spending during the Euro 2016 tournament, with an average of €185 set to be spent on alcohol.
Livewire worked with Ignite Research to survey 1000 people as part of Livewire Euros Insider, and found that over 40% of people list food and drink as the main reason for spending more money during the tournament.
Meanwhile, just over a third said they expect to spend more on alcohol alone. Those surveyed stated that they would spend around €185 on alcohol over the course of the tournament.
Livewire added that the fact that 90% of people say they will watch some matches at home is good news for television advertisers. Research also shows that almost half of Irish fans watching matches at home will also use their smartphone (46%); by far the most used second device, ahead of laptops (32%) and tablets (17%).
Jamie Macken, a Partner with Livewire, commented on the effect the Euros will have on consumers, saying, "The tournament seems to have lifted people’s spirits – it’s obvious there is a sense of optimism around the country and this can be seen in the increase in personal spending on food, drink and household goods across a range of different demographics. Of course, this is good news for sponsors."
