A 12-bottle lot comprising an assortment of 1999 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti from the grand cru Burgundy vineyard sold for $41,825 at a Hart Davis Hart Wine Co auction in Chicago this month, as did a six-litre methuselah of La Tache 1985 DRC, reflecting continuing buoyant demand for mature collectible wines from the region.
The sale, which took in $5.66 million, also featured top Bordeaux labels, with 12 bottles of Petrus 1989 selling for $38,240 and a six-litre imperial from the same grower’s 2005 vintage selling for $31,070, according to an e-mailed statement from the auction house.
The sale came as the fine wine market continues to rally after a 40 per cent drop in prices of many top Bordeaux wines since 2011. The auction included 31 lots of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, which fetched a combined $220,955, and 15 lots of Petrus, which totaled $202,552.
“Hammer prices were higher than we’ve seen since 2014,” Hart said in its statement.
Burgundies featured strongly among lots which significantly beat pre-sale estimates, including 12 bottles of Vosne-Romanee Beaux Monts 1993 from Domaine Leroy, which sold for $21,510, and six bottles of Musigny 2012 from Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, which fetched $14,340.
Other standout Bordeaux lots included 12 bottles of Lafite 1982, which attracted a winning bid of $33,460, and 12 bottles of Chateau Latour 1982, another Pauillac first growth wine, which sold for $21,510. Prices included a buyer’s premium of 19.5 per cent.
