Simon Zebo, the international rugby star, has partnered with Ernest Cantillon, co-founder of the Kinsale Spirit Company, to launch Black Emerald.
They have joined Finian Sedgwick, a veteran in the global spirits industry, to create a whiskey that aims to reflect the ‘vibrancy and modernity’ of Ireland and the versatility of single-grain Irish whiskey.
Black Emerald is aged in rum and cognac barrels and infuses ‘bright and fruity flavours with the rum, and rich, complex flavours with the cognac.’ Zebo claims that Black Emerald was born over a shared drop of whiskey, sparking a conversation about Ireland’s evolving identity.
Zebo was also inspired by his father’s extensive whiskey collection. The branding of the whiskey aims to acknowledge Ireland’s history of emigration and with it, global influence, capturing the essence of what it means to be Irish beyond our own shores.
“Our whiskey isn’t just a drink – it’s an invitation,” said Zebo. “It’s about encouraging you to pull up a chair, share a dream, a story, and toast to new friends and old.”
As Black Emerald gears up for its global launch, the founders are seeking investors to join them in shaping its future.
With deep roots in Cork, the team notes that this venture aims to introduce a new generation of Irish whiskey to the world. Investments are now open, and Irish residents can avail of 50% income tax relief with the EIIS (Employment Investment Incentive Scheme).
“Our whiskey pays homage to the communities, stories and friendships that have shaped our island and continue to inspire our global impact,” said Sedgwick.
“Whether at home in Ireland or abroad, we invite you to raise a glass to the road we’ve already travelled and the journey yet to come.”
